The History

Chrome happened every Thursday night at Axis where Resident DJs John Debo & Ali Ajami spun the muckiest house, toughest techno, and the deepest trance.

For nearly seven years, Thursday nights at Axis had
been the place to experience top DJs and club culture
from around the globe. Originally launched at Venus de Milo on Lansdowne Street in 1991, Culture, the night which evolved into Chrome quickly developed a reputation, along with Caffeine in Long Island and Fever in Baltimore as one of the East Coast’s premier venues to enjoy upfront, underground dance music.

That reputation rapidly spread far beyond our shores attracting some of the best DJs in the world. Sasha, John Digweed, Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Deep Dish, Paul Van Dyk, Laurent Garnier, Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, Jimmy Van M and Chris Fortier, all regular guests, rated Chrome as a top club night in the US.

Resident DJ John Debo was the driving force keeping this weekly party alive. Debo’s undying passion for the finest underground dance music was one of the main culprits responsible for bringing DJ culture to New England. His ear for music coupled with a superb technical ability on the decks took Debo to many of the top clubs in the US, UK, Canada and Central America regularly.

Joined in late 1999, DJ Ali Ajami was brought into the fold after Debo played a guest spot at Ali’s club night in Montreal. Ali exhibited an exuberance and intense passion for dance music found only in the greatest DJs. Together the duo took minions descending upon Chrome on a musical journey unlike any other in New England.

After 12 years in Orlando, John Debo returned home to Boston in 2017. Since returning, he and long-time friend and fellow Boston based artist Will Monotone often toyed with the idea of relaunching the Chrome brand. Monotone’s persistence finally won out, with Debo finally agreeing to a 2022 relaunch of Chrome.

Chrome’s reincarnation will be in the form of both a record label and production company. The label will avoid the broken, artist robbing model of streaming services & content retailers, to focus on a policy of releasing forward thinking, underground sounds.

Label releases will be supported by carefully curated boutique events, with a by the DJ, for the DJ feel, effectively becoming a vehicle embracing and elevating like-minded artists, while always respecting the past, present and future of Boston’s club culture. Music & culture will always come first, and quality will always trump quantity. See you on a dancefloor soon!
